Every baby born in the Shire of Augusta/Margaret River now receives a FREE BOOK as part of Better Beginnings, a family literacy initiative launched at Augusta-Margaret River Libraries in 2006. Shire Libraries working with the State Library of Western Australia have established the Better Beginnings programme to encourage parents to share books and stories with their babies. The libraries work in partnership with the Community Health Nurses to distribute free books and accompanying information and activity kits.

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River has contributed the funds to purchase the gift books.

The libraries’ role in this exciting new programme highlights the Shire’s commitment to encouraging children to enjoy
sharing stories while simultaneously improving their listening and language skills.
